St. Michael School's academic program uses the standards of the Diocese of Hartford Curriculum. Additionally, in the 2025-2026 academic year, supported by the Mother Cabrini Initiative at the Portland Diocese, our middle school grades 6-8 will transition to classical education in the subjects of social studies, English language arts (ELA) and Latin. Grades 4+ will also implement a civics curriculum in the coming year. Along with all Catholic schools in the diocese, we will also transition to a new common religion curriculum, Spirit of Truth.
A Classical Liberal Arts Education cultivates a deep appreciation for the great works of literature, history, and philosophy, fostering critical thinking and effective communication skills. It is designed to prepare young people to live in freedom and independence, engaging them in the highest matters and the deepest questions of truth, justice, virtue, and beauty. This foundation of excellence is deeply in line with our school’s mission, and the mission of Catholic education.
"...there are truths that must be known, truths that shape not just the intellect, but the soul. Not merely the facts that crowd the pages of standardized tests, not the transient data that fills our screens before vanishing into the ether, but the things that must be known in the depths of a cultivated soul. The tragedy of Hamlet, the geometry of Euclid, the virtues extolled by Aquinas, the poetry of Homer’s blind sight—these are not relics of an irrelevant past. These are the living roots of civilization itself, roots that must be tended, that must be nourished."
