Teacher - Mrs. Alyssa Benedict
Children in 2nd grade have a busy year when it comes to Religion! Much of our year is spent in preparation and receiving of the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation, and First Eucharist.
Second graders practice reading to
become better readers by listening to books, reading to self, or someone from books individually chosen as "Good Fit "books. These are chosen by purpose, interest, comprehension ability, and knowing vocabulary within the book. We work on phonics (blends, vowel sounds, digraphs, r-controlled sounds, inflected endings, decoding strategies). Spelling coincides with the phonics work.
Math includes addition and subtraction, with or without regrouping, money, time, and problem solving.
For writing we explore the six traits of ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, and presentation with examples found in pictures books. We respond to prompts in journals, practice letter writing, narratives, and descriptions, express opinions in persuasive writing, and learn to edit our work.
We use Weekly Reader for Social Studies.
Cursive writing begins in second grade.
